MOVIDA Kitchen+Bar+Club Lounge at Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara

It’s time to PARRRRRR-TAY!

“MOVIDA, means “Party” in Cuban street slang and “To Move or Movement” in Spanish. A live dining and music room that features the sounds of world music as well as serving up the best of Western and Asian Cuisine”.

It was a Tuesday night, approximately 730pm as I pulled into the parking lot of the newly opened Sunway Giza in Kota Damansara. It was packed. Lines and lines of cars cruised along searching for parking spots, and I nabbed one right by the escalator that too me straight up past the Village Grocer. It was just my luck as well, that Movida was located directly outside the supermarket.

It was packed. Tables both inside and outside were occupied with young professionals unwinding after work with some grub and drinks.

Happy hour starts from 12 noon and ends at 10pm, so you have all day to squeeze in the ‘Buy One Get One’ offer. Hazim (Red Weekends), DJ Chinois (Red FM’s Skooldaze), Hawa (Programme Manager), Alvin (Photographer) and I were shown upstairs to the VIP area by Nic Lim, our host for the evening.

While waiting for our food, we were entertained by the in-house magician, Chris Cheong. He was very entertaining and could bend a fork with the sheer power of his mind.

Then, to prove it wasn’t a ‘trick fork’ he placed it in my hand, told me to hold on tight and I watched in amazement as the stem of the fork slowly twisted.

He also had a few card tricks up his sleeve! When you go there, you must get him to perform for you.

At Movida, your appetite will never leave unsatisfied. With Soups like Prawn Consomme, a clear soup with fresh prawn’s enhanced with lemongrass juice and fresh basil, you’ll feel warm all over. Choose from a wide range of Starters like Squid With Cherry Tomato And Kaffir Lime Leaf, with fresh Asian herb leaves, olive oil, onion’s & green chillies.

We actually started off the meal with the Seared Scallops (RM28.00) served with mango chili salsa, alfafa and basil oil on grilled zucchini.

The scallops were juicy, and the mango chilli salsa sweet and spicy, yet refreshing at the same time. I really like the succulent zucchini that was nice and charred on the edges, but still soft and moist in the middle.

Next up, we had the Baked Mussel (RM20.00).“Oh, WOW!”exclaimed Hazim. “This is delicious!” And he was absolutely spot on.

The fresh mussel was smothered in Togarashi mayo, baked, and topped with spring onions & ebiko (prawn roe). It was rich, and creamy and very sinful. Great for sharing.

If you’re feeling like something light yet satisfying, the Sandwiches And Burgers looked quite interesting. I checked out the menu and spied a Retro Sandwich with grilled chicken, beef bacon, turkey ham & fried egg with tomatoes, cheddar & lettuce. The Steak Sandwich with aioli, watercress, caramelized onion, gherkin & tomatoes also sounded incredibly moreish.

Our main courses were impressive, both in size, and in taste. The Main Event offers dishes like Pepper Crusted Tenderloin with grilled vegetables, red wine sauce & boiled potatoes.

Hazim, Chinois and I marvelled at the size of our Country Style Roast Chicken (RM28.00).

The sizeable roasted half chicken is doused in a thick, meaty mushroom gravy, and served with grilled sweet potatoes & corn cob.

A popular dish and house specialty was the beautifully presented Fillet of Salmon (RM33.00).

A crispy, pan-fried hunk of a fish, beautifully pink inside, complemented by zucchini ribbon, boiled baby potatoes, and spicy tomato sauce. I mean, for the price you pay, that’s a more than decent portion of salmon.

Next up, a Pasta Aglio-olio with Seafood (RM28.00).

Mussels, clams, prawns and squid tossed with olive oil, chili, parsley & basil and al dente spaghetti. Another interesting item on the menu was the Pasta With Scallop & Pesto, made with grilled scallops, parmesan cheese, pinenuts & basil.

Of course, if you’re not up for a big meal, and fancy just something to nibble on, try something from the Snacks And Bites (Great With Drinks). The Movida Platter offers you Quesadillas, chicken wings, tempura calamari, and prawn served with thai chili sauce.

Our platter was the Clubber’s Platter (RM33.00), with marinated chicken wings, sautéed lamb sausages, potato wedges & grilled squid.

The Char Grilled Lamb (RM21.00) arrived, and it was a mountain of meat.

A definite favourite amongst us. Juicy chunks of lamb, grilled to a perfect medium well, served with a mint jelly and sweet potato.

Also great for sharing are the Pizzas. The Al Salmone Pizza (RM34.00) has a thick, crisp crust, and is loaded with smoked salmon, capers, bell paper, olives & onions.

If you fancy more than one topping, the Movida Speaciale Pizza offers Margheritta, Tropicana, seafood & salami all in one pizza.

Movida also serves you dishes with a Local Touch (Asian Delights).Recommended dishes include the Green Oxtail With Steam Rice & Cracker’s and the Thai Style Baked Seafood With Steamed Rice & Sauteed Vegetable’s.

We finished off the meal with a creative dessert of Chilli Orange Cheese Cake (RM18.00).

This was a round tartlet filled with cheese, on a dense, dark crust, served with orange coulis & strawberry.

After enjoying a meal with such diverse dishes, and pretty presentation, it became clear that Movida really does have the recipe for success. Great food, great drinks, awesome music, and most importantly, the right atmosphere to truly enjoy your evening.

Thanks to Nic Lim and the staff of Movida for a wonderful evening.

Special thanks to Alvin for the beautiful photographs. www.damienphotography.com
